About the History of Penfield

The Penfield Company began in the 1880's as a general mercantile company
in Lincoln County, NM,
the home of Billy the Kid. The store served as a trade center with
people coming from all parts of the
state to trade in everything from farm supplies to Indian rugs.
The original store has since been made into a state museum.
The John
M. Penfield mentioned in the sign shown above is the grandfather of
the current owner.
