Ricardo P. Salazar - Taos Santo Carver

Ricardo was inspired to learn the craft of carving Santos from his late uncle, Leo Salazar, who was an internationally known Santero. Ricardo views carving as not only an art form, but a religious experience as well. He uses twisted natural cedar from northern New Mexico to carve the Santos. He gathers wood looking for pieces that are at least 75 years old, wood which has been cured naturally by the forces of nature. He then carves it in a manner that unlocks the figure that is already present in the raw cedar. Ricardo's skill lies in letting the wood express itself, using the natural contours of the cedar to give form to his work.

Ricardo shows and sells his pieces to galleries in New Mexico, California, and Florida. He has won a blue ribbon at Spanish Market in Santa Fe in 1998 and an honorable mention in 1999. He has also won ribbons at La Fiesta De Colores in Grants, NM.
